John Wick: Chapter 4 was supposed to drop in May 2022, but now it appears Lionsgate is pushing the fourth film all the way into 2023. There is no official reason behind the delay, however, some theorize it has to do with the surging Omicron variant cases leading to some theaters shuttering their doors in concern.
This isn’t the first time John Wick: Chapter 4 saw the delay hammer drop down and it certainly wouldn’t be the first time if it was due to COVID-19. Initially, the film, which has been in public’s point of view since 2019, was a huge casualty of the virus as it was meant to release on May 27, 2021.
After the original date didn’t pan out, Lionsgate pushed its release to May 21, 2022, likely hoping that things would improve if this latest delay was because of COVID. At the same time, it could be they want to push their luck at getting a less hard-hitting film they’d have to be up against.
If it were still on track for a 2022 release, it would be forced to compete with the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, which features the return of Tom Cruise in his titular role. This could be a difficult flick to compete with and as such perhaps Lionsgate doesn’t want the competition against Paramount Pictures.
